π #StudyTuesdays|Cardiff is calling βΒ and bringing your own funding is just the first step, not a roadblock.
Cardiff University's School of Computer Science & Informatics is offering a self-funded PhD project: Geo-Aware Graph Learning for Transferable Flood Mapping from Earth Observation Data (GRAFT) β building AI models that map flood risk accurately across different regions, a real gap in current climate resilience tools.
Cardiff University's School of Computer Science & Informatics is offering a self-funded PhD project: Geo-Aware Graph Learning for Transferable Flood Mapping from Earth Observation Data (GRAFT).
π The research: Flood-detection AI models often fail when applied outside the region they were trained on β different terrain, hydrology, and land cover throw them off. This project builds "geo-aware" graph learning models designed to generalize across regions, directly strengthening how flood risk can be mapped and predicted globally, including in places with limited existing data.
π You'll need: A 2:1 or Master's in computing or a related field, strong mathematics grounding, and English proficiency (IELTS 6.5+ if applicable).
β οΈ Important: This project has no attached funding β tuition, visa costs, and the UK healthcare surcharge are the student's responsibility. This is best suited to applicants who already have, or can secure, their own scholarship or sponsorship (e.g., a national government scholarship, Commonwealth Scholarship, or similar).
π IMVELO Impact: Flood mapping that actually works across different regions β not just the one it was trained on β is exactly the kind of climate resilience infrastructure Africa needs more of, especially as flood risk from events like El NiΓ±o grows more severe.
π Location: Cardiff, UK
β° Deadline: Rolling β applications accepted year-round
